Thank you to the 28 entries in our first holiday cookie competition!!  The judges were impressed with "Toledo bakers" and more than 140 attended the Lunch & Learn event.  The judges/speakers were great fun and we're looking forward to repeating this event next year with even more ideas on holiday baking!

About Lunch & Learn

HeART Gallery Lunch & Learn takes place on the third Thursday each month with an art exhibit, themed lunch menu and speaker. Monthly presentations cover a variety of topics of interest. HeART Gallery is a ministry of St Paul's Lutheran Church where we can reflect God's grace by sharing time and fellowship with one another.

Lunch is by donation, with a suggestion of $20-$30pp. HeART Gallery is located in St Pauls Lutheran Church,  428 North Erie Street, Toledo. Free parking is available in the KWIK LOT adjacent to the building, which is handicap accessible.

Oct 19 and Oct 21 Lunch & Learn

We are pleased to announce a holiday baking competition in partnership with King Arthur Flour. The competition will take place in October, in celebration of National Cookie Month, and in preparation for the upcoming holiday baking season.  Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas cookies are all eligible for the contest. 

"We want to use this competition as an opportunity to shine a spotlight on excellent home-bakers in the Greater Toledo area, " said Kate Philabaum, Director HeART Gallery. "We hope this will include favorite family recipes as well as ethnic cookies that our community is known for.  Each cookie will be accompanied by its story of inspiration or family tradition, and we look forward to learning about each other through our holiday baking traditions."

STAGING

Cookies will be plated by HeART Gallery on themed contest tables: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. One dozen will be plated for Oct 19 and one dozen for Oct 21.  Even though cookies will be plated both days,  judging for adult entries will take place on Oct 19. Judging for student entries will take place on Oct 21.

JUDGES

We have a fantastic panel of judges with diverse culinary backgrounds and contest baking experience.  Judges will talk about their unique experiences after lunch and then announce their prize-winning favorite cookies.  Adult entries will be judged Thursday, Oct 19 and student entries will be judged Saturday, Oct. 21.

 

Thursday, October 19

Susan Chagas and Nikki Lohman from Zingerman's Bakehouse, Ann Arbor will be present to discuss "baking principles" and introduce their new holiday cookbook.

Maddie Copple, new food editor of The Blade, will share her experiences of the first few months "on the job".  She follows the beloved Mary Alice Powell and Mary Bilyeu as previous editors. Maddie's enthusiasm wins hearts wherever she goes!

 

Saturday October 21

Melissa Jollands, from Hudsonville, MI was the winner of the 2022 Pillsbury Bake Off Contest. Her passion is baking of all kinds and she will share her story of the contest, its preparation and participation.  Melissa will also demonstrate her prize-winning recipe.

 

Caroline Crispino, from Chicago, ILL, was the winner of the 2022 Chicago Tribune Christmas Cookie Contest.  Her winning recipe, Chocolate Salted-Caramel Surprise cookie  is a chocolate cookie dough with a Rolo inside, topped with flaky salt. She will do a live demo with the winning recipe, which will be available for all Lunch & Learn guests.

Reservations to attend the Lunch & Learn OR to enter the Holiday Cookie Contest should be made to kate@stpaulstoledo.org. Lunch is by donation with $20-$30 suggested.
