HOLIDAY COOKIE COMPETITION

Ladies and Gentlemen: Start your mixers! HeART Gallery is hosting a Holiday Cookie Competition sponsored by King Arthur Flour. Contestants are invited to submit their best holiday cookie recipe by October 8 for a chance to win cash prizes up to $250, gift basket, and $75 gift card from King Arthur Flour. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday cookies are eligible.

Our goal in hosting this event is to highlight the exceptional home bakers and their

traditional family recipes, as well as the ethnic cookies that Toledo is known for. With most holiday cookies, there is a ‘story in every bite’. Where

did the recipe come from? What family traditions are associated with it? When do you first

remember baking it? Is it related to a particular holiday or religious celebration? We hope to learn more about each other and the diversity in our area as we uncover those stories.

A panel of judges with varied culinary backgrounds and contest baking experience, will talk about their own unique competitive baking experiences at Lunch & Learn events on Thursday, Oct 19 and Saturday, Oct 21 at noon. Prize-winning cookies will be announced at that time.

Judges include Susan Chagas, instructor at Zingerman's hands-on teaching bakery in Ann Arbor, MI. Included in her presentation will be the release of Zingerman’s new Holiday Cookie Cookbook - for sale at the event.

Melissa Jollands, from Hudsonville, winner of the 2022 Pillsbury Bake Off Contest,

will share her story of the contest, its preparation and participation. Melissa will also demonstrate her prize-winning recipe.

Caroline Crispino, from Chicago, ILL, winner of the 2022 Chicago Tribune Christmas Cookie Contest, will share her winning recipe, Chocolate Salted-Caramel Surprise cookie - a chocolate cookie dough with a Rolo inside, topped with flaky salt.

In addition to hearing the panel of judges, guests attending the Lunch & Learn event will see a vintage apron display, baking demos, and the decorated King Arthur Flour contest table. A buffet-style lunch will be served, and recipes from contest entires will be available for guests. Reservations are needed to attend.
